    The Three Kings

    5pm

    The Three Kings

Already being described as a Melbourne blues super group, Three Kings brings together a trio of this country’s most dedicated, authentic blues artists, with down and dirty, totally inspiring results.

Officially formed in 2011 by Ian Collard (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Benny Peters (vocals and guitar), and Jason Liu Soon (drums), Three Kings’ self titled debut album took out the award for best blues CD in The Age Victorian music awards only a fortnight after release. The album entered the Australian Blues and Roots Airplay Chart at number two before shooting up to first place.

Three Kings’ hard-hitting, greasy blues style takes you on a dangerous joy ride through the back roads and juke joints of American music history, combining the sounds of artists like Kid Thomas, John Lee Hooker, Slim Harpo and Jerry McCain with their own original spin.

Collard and Peters are well known for their own combos, Collard Greens and Gravy and Benny and the Fly By Niters, as well as other line-ups and both have played to appreciative USA and European audiences. Liu Soon has supplied the beats for Chris Wilson and The Detonators. Together the tight knit trio rocks hard and blue.

United by their passion for the world’s greatest blues, all three members of Three Kings have traced the paths of the genre’s pioneers, riding Greyhound buses through cities such as LA, Memphis, Texas, Chicago, New Orleans and St. Louis to get to the source. The Three Kings CD launch played to a sold out crowd at Melbourne’s Caravan Club and alt-country star, Justin Townes Earle (winner of the 2011 Americana Music Award for Song of the Year), said, “No one should have to follow these guys on stage. No one,” after witnessing their debut gig.

On stage the Three Kings sound like an old 45, you can practically hear the record crackle and the needle pop. As The Age newspaper reported, “Peters and Collard spent about a year working on getting a harmonica to sit tight with an electric guitar, Chicago-style, before calling Liu Soon to glue it all together. The qualities they were looking for – words like aggressive, frightening, dangerous, raw and trashy – come up.”

    THE BAKERSFIELD GLEE CLUB

    5pm

    Bakersfield Glee Club Photo

Back when Buck Owens was a boy in Texas and before Merle Haggard’s family moved from Oklahoma you might wonder what went on in Bakersfield, California. But for decades from the 1950s it was a boom-town. Not just because of the oil or the fertile soils of the San Joaquin Valley, but because a sound was fashioned in the hands of Buck, Merle, Tommy Collins, Wynn Stewart and other émigrés from around the USA that has become synonymous with stripped back and hard country.
The Bakersfield Glee Club draws members from as far as Gippsland to Glen Waverley and backgrounds ranging from prog- rock to bluegrass – each inspired by this straight up style that has endured since the middle of the last century and today is one of few country-genres that is still unmistakably country. And like all good glee clubs their repertoire is diverse enough to include classics from town they draw their name, western swing, honky- tonk and an occasional jazz standard.
The formula is as old, tried and true. The line-up has everything they need and you want to hear – driving rhythm, soaring fiddle and pedal steel that will make you cry in your beer. Perhaps most importantly, over a number of years in Melbourne bars and other places, The Bakersfield Glee Club has paid their dues, gathering a following amongst the country hard core, the two-steppers and general roots-music fans.
Darren Maxfield – Vocals/Guitars, Greg Field – Fiddle/Vocals Seamus O’Sullivan – Pedal Steel, Justin Rudge – Bass Simon Edwards – Drums

    THE BEEZ (BERLIN)

    8PM

    Beez

The Beez - that cabaret band from Berlin - have become festival favourites in Australia these last ten years and now, oh Lordy! Theyve just graduated from their famous "Sitzdisco" (dancing while seated) to "Moshpitzen" (mosh pitting) with the addition of fabulous all- dancing, all-singing drummer Annette Kluge. When Nina Hagens ace percussionist Herwig Mitterregger landed a brace of hits in Germany and suddenly found he needed a drummer, he hired Annette. Hailing from Hamburg, Annette has catapulted those toe tappin Teutons to the dance floor while still retaining The Beez acoustic sound and soaring four-part harmonies. Once purveyors of excentric cover versions of songs from the Balkans to the Baltic-“ The originals can only be considered second best to The Beez wonderfully unique interpretations” (Berliner Morgenpost), The Beez now cover their own compositions as well, creating a bittersweet and truly diverse potpourri of genres, their trademark cabaret sensibilities never far from the surface. Accordion chanteuse and native West Berliner Deta co-founded the legendary Berliner cabaret venue Chameleon shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and drafted Sydney boy Rob Rayner, singer and guitarist, and finger picking San Franciscan Peter DElia on banjo and dobro. The Beez play an average 120 shows a year, primarily in Europe, but extending to major folk festivals in Canada and Australia. The Beez have also appeared on ABC TVs Spicks and Specks. They will be touring Australia for the 7th time from January to May 2016.

    THE HIRED GUNS

    7pm

    Hired Guns

The Hired Guns were formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1996, with the original line-up of Adam Spellicy (The Dumb Earth), Chris Willard and David Creese (both from The Dumb Earth and Lizard Train) and Anthony Paine (High Pass Filter, Snout and Black Cab).

The band was initially conceived as a side project from the members' other esoteric musical concerns, and evolved from their mutual love of late 60s/early 70s psychedelic country rock, and an interest in the burgeoning alt.country movement.

After releasing a debut split 7" single with Sydney band The Dearhunters in 1999, on the Steady Cam label, The Hired Guns added multi-instrumentalist Timothy Deane and Jane McCracken to their ranks and released their first full length album, "Between Here & The Night", on Laughing Outlaw Records, in 2002.

After a lengthy hiatus during which the band underwent line-up changes and the members followed their other musical pursuits, The Hired Guns returned to the studio in late 2008 (with new drummer Kjirsten Robb replacing David Creese), to record their second album.

    Harvey Cartel

    7pm

    Harvey Cartel 1

Drawing from such bad-assery as razor blades, guns, and the desert, The Harvey Cartel provide the kind of slick, moody soundtrack of blues, R&B and rock n roll suited to any Tarantino flick.

Formed in early 2013, The Harvey Cartel squeeze fresh juice out of old limes, zesting up familiar and not-so-familiar tunes with bassist Owen Downie, guitarist Todd Beeby and drummer Darren Seknow.

The Harvey Cartel punch through a jukebox of river crossings, dodgy back alleys and sketchy plane rides to deliver the goods to get you hopped up. The songs you know, you've never heard like this before. And the songs you don't, you'll want to hear again.

MICK DALEY & THE CORPORATE RAIDERS

    5pm

    Mick Daley

Mick Daley's Corporate Raiders are pulling a smash and grab at the Labor in Vain on Sunday afternoon from 5-7pm. Just back from Darwin, the band grapples with country as much as rock and roll, though frontman Mick Daley claims to be veering away from the rarefied country rock and roll of his other outfit The Re-Mains. Either way, it's a guaranteed evening of gritty dirt-track dirges.

    THE BEAT OF BRUNSWICK STREET

    5pm

    Beat of brun new web
    5PM - JOSHUA SEYMOUR SOLO
Joshua Seymour is a storyteller, an interpreter, and someone who can hold a captive audience in any situation. Having spent the last few years as co-songwriter in Melbourne based alt-country band, Cherrywood, Josh has come out swinging with a fantastic set of his own songs.

His debut L.P Rope Tied Hope, recorded in Argyle, Texas, see’s him put his own Australian spin on Americana. Drawing from his own personal experiences, sometimes hilarious, often poignant fictional accounts, he brings an honesty and frankness to his songs. His distinctive, enigmatic vocal style and unique take on finger picking with both Guitar and Mandolin should see this burgeoning talent considered one of Australia’s most exciting songwriters.

    6PM - GREEN TIN
Green Tin are a classic blues band soaked in VB cans and a punk ethos. Featuring members of Batpiss, wild harmonica solos and a rubbish bin, they're guaranteed to get your foot tapping and your liver primed.

7.30PM - SKYSCRAPER STAN & THE COMMISSION FLATS

The first born child of a novelist and a documentary editor, "Skyscraper" Stan Woodhouse was raised with an innate appreciation for language. Although he had been writing poetry and fiction from a young age, it wasn't until his mid teens that he first turned his attention to songwriting.

Working nights at a basement venue in his hometown, Stan found himself thrust into the limelight after the proprietor heard him singing over a mop bucket. The next year and a half was spent bouncing between the bar and the stage by night and sleeping in University lecture halls by day.

Just shy of his 21st Birthday Stan relocated to Melbourne under the pretense of completing his zoology degree. Which he did, halfheartedly, and all the while moonlighting as a troubadour.

The expansive emptiness of Australia has served as a great inspiration to Stan's songwriting. His autobiographical and observational lyricism seems to belie his relative youth. Most at home on the Hume Highway or any of the other tarmac ribbons criss crossing the country, Stan tours extensively both solo and with his band "The Commission Flats"

The Commission Flats are a dysfunctional family band. Oskar Herbig, Stan's younger cousin, provides the guitar chops. Originally from Auckland via Wellington Oskar cut his teeth playing in, writing for and fronting bands of his own before moving to Melbourne. Martin Schilov fills out the low end with his bass guitar, on the beat, every time. The Sharard sisters; Gemma and Lia take care of the backing vocals. On Saturday 27 February the best of Brunswick Street will be on display for a brand new event called THE BEAT OF BRUNSWICK STREET.

Between 1pm and 1am over 55+ bars, cafes, established music venues and stores on Brunswick St and immediate surrounds will be hosting live music and DJs.

The vibrancy and diversity of Melbourne’s truly bohemian and cultural heartland will be pumping.

The BEAT OF BRUNSWICK STREET is supported by the City of Yarra and encourages everyone to visit Brunswick Street on the day to experience what is on offer.

London born and raised, Alison Ferrier began her musical career in Melbourne Australia, playing acoustic guitar and fiddle with country duo The Wayward Fancies. Hamish Kilgour Solo

    8PM

    Hamish Kilgor

Hailing from Dunedin, New Zealand, drummer/vocalist/songwriter Hamish Kilgour formed the Clean in 1978 with his brother David, going on to be an eternally obscure but massively influential group and one of the front-runners for the sounds that came to be known as kiwi pop, college rock, and eventually alternative and indie rock. The Clean went through various lineup changes early on and would go through long stretches of inactivity or hiatus. Kilgour stayed active in various bands and projects through much of the ’80s, ’90s, and beyond, deeply woven into the Flying Nun Records scene that helped spawn like-minded acts like the Bats and the Chills. Along with brother David, Hamish worked in wistful, jangly tones similar to the Clean with the Great Unwashed in the early ’80s, and went on to do time with bands such as Bailter Space and the Moles. In 1990, Hamish formed Monsterland, playing guitar alongside guitarist/bassist Lisa Siegel. The band formed in Auckland, New Zealand, but when they moved to New York City in 1991, they quickly changed their name to the Mad Scene, discovering there was already a New York band using the Monsterland name. Hamish continued playing and recording sporadically with the Clean as the decades went on, and in 2014 released his first proper solo album. Released on the Ba Da Bing Records imprint, All of It & Nothing featured help on Kilgour’s original tunes from Brooklyn veteran indie rockers such as Gary Olson and Miggy Littleton. ~ Fred Thomas

DAVID HEARD'S 60TH FEATURING EATEN BY DOGS

    6PM

    Eaten by Dogs

Eaten by Dogs on stage at 8pm

"Very humble and human, a soft Australian night bled out with the expansive and atmospheric musicianship. This is a smooth, relaxing listen from start to finish."
    - The Music, Baily Lions

A country music travel tip: stay in Melbourne.

If you make the pilgrimage to Nashville in search of great country music all you’re going to find is some old mate playing a cover that’s been played a million times by countless musicians beforehand – and don’t get us started on Tamworth.

Melbourne town is full of the world’s best alt-country songwriters and bands. Eaten By Dogs is one of of them. Their songs are honest, rich and spacious – they’ve managed to make a record that sounds great in the sun with a beer as well as late at night with a whiskey.
    Beloved host of
Acid Country on PBSfm, Radio announcer since the beginning of PBS 106.7FM Melbourne, one time winner of the Yarra Citizen of the Year award, CBAA Volunteer of the Year, Man about town…

He’s my friend and yours; It's David Heard.
He's turning 60 this year and he doesn't want to make a big deal about it....

So there'll be a small bash on at The Labour In Vain and we’d love you to come along. Word on the street: Eaten By Dogs are playin' & the BBQ will be sizzlin'.

Danny Walsh Banned & Toby Robinson Band

    7PM

    danny walsh 3toby robinson

The Danny Walsh Banned play music for your inner fugitive. They feature Johnny Livewire on bass (Morning After Girls), Dave Mudie on drums (Courtney Barnett), the untamed urban youth of Will Hewett on guitar, the unmatched bush experience of Leo 'The Weed' Tellefson on keys, and rambunctious feather-capped Danny Walsh (Miserable Little Bastards) out front. Along with storming the city juke joints an country halls, the Banned finds a natural stomping ground at festivals, previously tearing up the Kyneton Music Festival, Sydney Road Street Party, Williamstown Beer Festival and the Delta Busking Festival (Mississippi). Their performances are often spontaneous and always high-powered. In 2013, they released their debut album ‘Rolling On’, which received praises from Melbourne to Mississippi. Now they’re coming to town packing material from their newly released second album full of swampy blues, piano driven rock ’n’ roll and dead-set Aussie boogie - standby for the show!

Sunshine Coast born singer/songwriter Toby Robinson releases his debut solo album next month with live performances in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast. Toby launched the album to a packed house at Bella Union, Melbourne on 5 June and is bringing the band home to Queensland for the first weekend in July. Toby will make his homecoming Brisbane debut at The City Sounds on 3 July.

Former frontman for altcountry band The Promises , Toby’s debut single Let You Down evokes the romanticism of folk with a nod to pop. Two years in the making, Toby’s self titled album was created in collaboration with his great friends an bandmates, Rob Kidd and Craig Hadlow, and producer Nick Huggins. With diverse influences ranging from Ry Cooder, John Renbourne, and The Shins to Nick Drake and The Cure, Toby’s album celebrates the story of his musical roots through a unique blend of folk, alt-country and indie pop.

“Making this album has been such a special journey, I’m so proud of and pleased with the end result,” says Toby. “Nick and I began the process by recording a single guitar in a rustic shed in a small country town, bringing a unique acoustic quality to the recording. Each artist to work on the record has added their own artistry to the vision.”

Toby Robinson’s life has always been immersed in music. Growing up on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Toby learnt folk guitar on his father’s knee. His first performance was busking at Eumundi markets where his early success entertaining passing bikie gangs inspired his brother to join him to form a family duo. The young brothers spent most weekends busking on Saturdays and surfing on Sundays. Melodious finger-picking single At Your Feet and ode to surfing All Said and Done conjure up a longing for these formative years spent by the ocean.

As a teenager Toby tried out a heavier sound with a thrash band called Bucket, who had the uniquely teenage gimmick of wearing buckets on their heads during performances. Thankfully Toby returned to his folk roots. Finding inspiration in nature, Toby’s favourite writing place is sitting by the rocks on Noosa National Park or walking in the hinterland, watching the sunrise over the ocean.

    BLOWN CONES

    5pm

    BLOWN CONES

The Blown Cones are a lounge room based band that was formed, well climbed out of the primordial bedroom, in 2000 and something. The founding members, Mike Hager and Andrew Bailey, got together after Chris Altmann’s Que Paso disbanded and Mike was left bored. Luckily Bailey had lots of amps and lots of acoustic guitars (weirdly no electrics to plug into all the amps) and his lounge room quickly became the first studio/stage. After what seemed like a month of months, Melbourne musos, Jeff Samin and Nick Murphy, chanced on hearing that catchy overalls-in-a-tumble-dryer style rhythm and joined in the fun. Nick had other engagements and couldn’t commit full time, but even to this day is still our silent keyboard player. (listen) We enlisted the services of drummer and soccer fan John Dunton who was the only one who could keep abreast (for want of a better word) of the new beat. Sadly John passed away before we hit stardom, but his memory lingers on in the rhythm. Filling John’s shoes was not an easy task as we’d drunk all the beer. Mike finally found a replacement in Jaden Jones, a proficient guitarist, who wanted to play drums. Jaden’s snide sense of humour (again for want of a better word) was a hit with the band, and so we became the drab four. Attempting to describe the band’s style is as pointless as the use of the word style is questionable. If you can understand that last sentence, you should like the band.

    GOATPISS 1

Van Walker joins forces with Mailtand guitar prodigy Hank Elwood and Dave 'The Suit' Watkins in Goatpiss Gasoline, the bastard brothers of such acts as Three Kings and Chris Russell's Chicken Walk, houserockin electrified blues boogie with no bass and plenty of piss and vinegar. Combining the irrisitable killer slide of Elmore James and down home toothless boogie of Jimmy Reed, Goatpiss Gasoline are natural good time music who flirt with a wine stained shirt and understand simplicity is a virtue.

    MITCH GRAINGER

    8PM

    Mitch Grainger

US-based Mitch Grainger returns to Australia in 2016, on tour to follow up his award winning album ‘The Blues’.

A master of the blues harp, singer and guitarist, Grainger cut his teeth with Harry Vanda, Alex Lloyd, Bondi Cigars and Papa Lips before re-locating stateside, where he plays harp on sessions from LA to Nashville. In this hi-tech world Mitch Grainger is now collaborating with artists from Hollywood to Botswana, while teaching people from all walks of life around the globe how to play their first ever note on the blues harp, though his wildly successful youtube channel.

    www.mitchgrainer.com

    ============

Discovered by MALCOLM YOUNG of AC/DC at age 16 and later trained in the Alberts' production tradition by HARRY VANDA, Mitch Grainger is one of Australia’s most talented and experienced Blues and Roots musicians, producers and performers.

After taking up the harmonica at age 14 inspired by a dream, Mitch was introduced to Little Walter and within 6 months was performing Blues n Roots music 3 nights a week across Inner Sydney on both the Guitar and Harmonica in THE BEEFS with Australian soon to be pop star ALEX LLOYD. After THE BEEFS disbanded (despite much industry attention) Mitch was recruited by the BONDI CIGARS in 1992 and put to work playing hard hitting blues guitar and harmonica across the length and breadth of Australia’s states and territories, from Broome to Launceston. This was a formative period in Mitch's life, what he calls his "university degree in rock n roll". He lived almost constantly on the road, in a new town, playing in front of a new crowd.

In 1994 after 2 years and one Album (After Closing Time), Mitch left the BONDI CIGARS and formed PAPA LIPS with his sister KARA GRAINGER, DECLAN KELLY, ROWAN LANE, DANNY GUERRERO and CLAYTON DOLEY. Together they created a sensation “Greater than when Lenny Cravitz re-discovered the wah wah pedal” (Michael Smith, Drum Media, Sydney). The band recorded “Harmony” (1996) and “High Time Now” (1998), toured constantly, and played Australia’s premier music festivals, including WOODFORD and BYRON BAY BLUES & ROOTS FESTIVAL numerous times.

In 2001 at the request of Atlantic, Epic, Sony and BMG records, Mitch and Kara Grainger visited New York to play showcases. Their visit coincided with the tragic September 11 terrorist attack and brought on a deep reflective period of song-writing for both Mitch and his sister, stretching over 5 years and leading them in different musical directions.

Upon hearing Mitch Grainger's compositions written during this period, legendary Australian producer,HARRY VANDA (Vanda/Young) encouraged Mitch to record his own debut solo album “LOVE & DEMONS”, which was released in 2006.

Since his 2006 solo debut Mitch Grainger’s voice and music has been heard in movie cinemas across Japan, America & Europe in the “DECEMBER BOYS” movie opening scene, in American and AustralianNATIONAL TV SHOWS such as NASHVILLE, KILLER WOMEN, RAKE, and THE TIME OF OUR LIVES. He has recorded countless sessions, written songs, and produced music with artists such as ROSA PULLMAN, PAPA LIPS, KARA GRAINGER, RICK PRICE, THE WRIGHTS, JOHN PAUL YOUNG and acclaimed Australian thespian, JACK THOMPSON.

Forward to today and Mitch Grainger has gained an international reputation and audience for his harmonica skills. Type “Harmonica Lessons" into YouTube, and Mitch’s video is the first one on the list.

In this hi-tech world Mitch Grainger is now collaborating with artists from Hollywood, to Botswana, while teaching people from all walks of life around the globe how to play their first ever note on the blues harp.

And now, in 2015, importantly ‘The Blues’ marks a signpost of artistic and personal growth that brings Mitch out of a recording hiatus and into the spotlight.

    PETE CORNELIUS BAND

    7pm

    PETE CORNELIUS

Pete Cornelius grew up as far away from the Delta heartland as is almost humanely possible. He’s never picked cotton, never hitched a ride on a freight train, nor traded with the Devil. Not knowingly, anyway. Yet the 31-year-old Tasmanian is one of the most experienced young bluesman in the country, with more live shows and festival appearances, album releases and awards under his belt than most performers twice his age.

From age 6, Pete started studying and writing songs on his parents’ piano in his hometown of St Mary’s. By 9, he had picked up a guitar, namely, he says because he couldn?’t bend those heavy piano strings. The same year he won his very first award; the prestigious “National Water Wise Songwriting competition.” The prize? A weekend in Brisbane, and performing on Agro’s Cartoon Connection. By 11 he became part of the Tasmanian Festival Wind Symphony, performing at corporate shows across Tasmania and at The Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival.

The young gun released his first album ‘Steppin?’ Out In Blue’ at 13. The album featured 11 original tracks with Pete playing all the instruments. He sold out all 500 of its limited release. His first band, Double Shuffle was formed around the same time, playing venues & festival across Tasmania.

At 15, “Pete Cornelius & The DeVilles” were formed, going on to perform at all the major festivals around Australia, and were invited back to most of them on numerous occasions. Releasing a number of albums including Live @ Narooma, Gotta’ Live, Creatures of The Night, Suburban Hell and Live at The Lakes they toured Australia numerous times and headed stateside in 2003. The DeVilles are still going strong to this day, with the band last touring nationally in 2012.

Pete has also released a couple of collaborative efforts; namely 2005’s Freerange (with Chicago bluesman Steve Arvey) and Man Of Peace with Ian Collard (a Bob Dylan cover released on iTunes). Pete has worn the producer hat on a couple of projects in recent years too – working with Tas outfits FatSmalls, Susannah Coleman-Brown, Steph Brett and Let The Cat Out. He’s also got a 3-piece side project called King Cake that specialises in New Orleans Funk, Memphis Soul & Texas Blues.

Pete often takes the opportunity to play guitar, bass or drums with many artists that visit The Apple Isle. Recent guest spots included working with Eugene Hideaway Bridges & JW Jones (USA), Ray Beadle and Geoff Achison. He’s also still in demand as a support artist, having recently opened for international artists Status Quo, Joanne Shaw Taylor (UK) and Joe Bonamassa & Eric Bibb (USA).

In 2010, Pete released Tumbleweed, a moody rockin’ blues delight that stretched the usual genre boundaries. The multi-layered instrumentation and songs on the album gained international support with airplay in the US, Europe & Canada.
Pete made a distinct decision to create a new band for both Tumbleweed and Groundswell, wanting to retain The DeVilles as the true blues band. From over all the years he spent performing with so many fantastic musicians; Pete wanted to have more of a collective outfit. The focus was now on the songs, not so much the guitar solos.

In 2011 Pete and his partner Lucie welcomed their first child; baby Etta (their 2nd child is born November 2013). For the first time in a long time, there were no tours, and just a handful of festival appearances.

In early 2013, Pete, together with Carus Thompson, performed a benefit show at The Lewisham Tavern for the thousands of people affected by Tasmania’s tragic bushfires. Pete and his band also spent the summer at his neighbour’s holiday house on Elephant Pass recording his latest new release, “Groundswell”.

The aim with the album was to capture that live vibe and sound, with all of the Drums, Bass and Guitar recorded live – something not done with the “Tumbleweed” release.

The 11 songs that Pete chose for “Groundswell” were not tied by genre either, with Pete feeling keen to record some r&b, funk, soul, rock and alt-country tracks, in a further shift away from previous releases. The album features originals worked in with some favourite songs from artists such as the Rev. Al Green, Otis Rush and Ray LaMontagne.

    Three Kings

    7pm

    three kings

Melbourne blues super group, Three Kings brings together a trio of this country’s most dedicated, authentic blues artists, with down and dirty, totally inspiring results.

The album entered the Australian Blues and Roots Airplay Chart at number two before shooting up to first place.Their 2nd “Here It Is” released in 2015 followed suit receiving rave reviews.

    Backwood Creatures

    7pm

    Backwood Creatures

Backwood Creatures is a Melbourne-based swamp-blues act that boast a loving local following, and a live show not to be missed.

Spearheaded by Jeb Cardwell, the energetic trio harks back to the glory days when guitar-driven rock and rich vocals were king. When these guys get going, musicianship, charisma and impossibly slick fingerwork leave crowds transfixed.

Twice named SA guitarist of the year, Jeb Cardwell is a live performance veteran. In the 20-odd years he’s been behind the axe, Jeb has toured Australia and over seas opening for artists such as Tony Joe White, Steve Earle & The Punch Brothers. Most recently Jeb recorded and toured nationally with Aria award winners Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson for their latest album release, ‘Wreck & Ruin’. An accomplished songwriter, Jeb has previously taken out the American BMI songwriting competition, and has been described by ABC Music as “a mean guitarist who plays like he just walked out of Austin, Texas.”

Bassist Grant Cummerford is hailed as one of Australia’s best blues-and-roots bass players. Throughout his many years thumping the strings, Grant has played alongside Jeff Lang, Chris Whitley, Xavier Rudd, Mia Dyson, The Audreys, Kevin Borich, Chain and Ash Grunwald. Onstage, he can be sprung giving his bandmates the occasional grin before getting down to business.

A sight to see in full flight, Tim Burnham is one of Melbourne’s most entertaining drummers. For over 10 years Tim has toured and recorded with Aussie greats such as Chris Wilson, Jimi Hocking and Lloyd Spiegel.

Backwood Creatures combine entertainment with musical ability. It’s their solid swamp-blues sound, plus the guarantee of some of the most impressive jams out of Melbourne, that keep audiences swilling beer until long after the final encore.

Their self-titled debut EP is now available!

“Hands down - One of the best live bands ever! The energy of Hendrix, the rawness of Tony Joe White and the sheer force of Zeppelin all in one!” - PBS Radio, Melbourne

"Jeb Cardwell is one of my favourite all round musicians in Australia. Master of guitar, banjo, dobro and can sing his arse off!!! I love him..." - Kasey Chambers

"I love the Backwood Creatures! They always take me away when they jam out on one of their swampy songs. Hard-hitting rhythm section and Jeb Cardwell is a killer guitarist too, so what's not to like?"- Jeff Lang

“Jebs fingerwork during a guitar solo is quite literally jaw-dropping.” - Three Thousand, Melbourne

Charlie Marshall & The Body Electric

    Charlie Marshall

CHARLIE MARSHALL AND THE BODY ELECTRIC

Performing sun may 22nd Labour in Vain, Fitzroy

New album ‘Won’t Give Up’ out now on Red Ted

Charlie Marshall and The Body Electric were an all too brief delight in the mid-1990's that included members of The Dirty Three, Beasts of Bourbon and The Avalanches, amoung others, in a stellar lineup of band members.

With the release of the compilation album
‘Won’t give up’, featuring highlight’s from the first two albums, 2016 has seen Charlie get back out on the road to Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra to reconnect with long term fans and draw in those who might have missed out on the band first time around.

The current lineup features Bryan Colechin (Hugo Race True Spirit) and Ashley Davies (Models, Crown of Thorns, Lisa Miller, Steve Lucas) both of whom played in the band back in the 90s, along with new guy Tim Deane (Ron Peno Superstitions). The Body Electric play their last Melbourne gig for some time with a laid back Sunday session at Labour in Vain on May 22nd.

Charlie Marshall is a singer songwriter from Melbourne. He plays guitar. His songs are poetic, romantic, philosophical meditations on life, love, fear, science and the universe. His singing is soulful and passionate. It may be gentle and intimate or intense and dynamic. His guitar style is rhythmic He plays colourful chords that you don’t hear all that often. He puts all these things together in intriging ways. He stomps his foot a lot when he plays.

Charlie’s songs have attracted many of Melbourne’s finest musicians over the years. He started songwriting with brother Chris when they formed Harem Scarem, the punk blues band loved by many in the 1980’s that included Chris Wilson in it’s stellar lineup. He formed The Body Electric in the 90s with Jim White and Warren Ellis from the Dirty Three and Brian Hooper from Beasts of Bourbon. Later lineups included members of the Avalanches, Silver Ray, Moodists and Dumb Earth. He has released six albums solo and with Body Electric.

    HE CRIES DIAMONDS

...some things were just meant to be.....

After being blown away by a performance by AGENT CLEAVE at the State Library over twelve months ago, RICHARD ANDREW (Underground Lovers / Pharmacy Records) decided there and then that he simply had to work with such a unique and amazing talent.

And thus HE CRIES DIAMONDS was born.

However, Cleave was soon whisked away to join Peaches on her world tour and has spent most of the last twelve months in the USA and Europe.

Not to be discouraged – Richard Andrew set about writing a suite of songs and sending the files to the touring Cleave and add his unique and compelling vocals.

And so, Cleave has very briefly returned to Australia, a fantastic band has been assembled (Andy Pap on bass, Andrew Heir on drums and Richard Andrew – guitar), an intensive series of rehearsals is under way as we prepare for the debut performance of HE CRIES DIAMONDS on Friday 20th May at The Labour in Vain.

Do come along – and then in years to come you can smugly say ...'Yes, I was there....'

    Luke Yeoward

    8PM

    LUKE Y2

LUKE YEOWARD - THE AVAIRY STUDIOS. IMAGE BY KRISTOFFER PAULSEN 2014.

I have spent the last 20 years playing, writing, co-writing, arranging, rehearsing, recording, producing, co-producing, performing, managing and promoting MUSIC.

I started playing when I was 10 years old with the acoustic guitar handed down from my Mum. I was the kid on the corner busking covers I picked up at home and school: Creedence Clearwater Revival, Neil Young and Cat Stevens, as well as primitive songs I had written from the few chords I knew.

I would pack up the guitar and take my old hat filled with coins down to the local music shop and empty its contents on the counter. One afternoon, after months of counting coins into the till, I walked out of that shop with my first electric guitar and a practice amp. I learned that hard work can pay off.

I started my first band at 13, and I cut my teeth through punk rock music. That’s how I learned to play, how I learned to write and how I learned to improvise. This is where I learned the imporantance of honesty and conviction in music.

Only playing punk rock lead to an early musical crisis. I wasnt being honest with myself and I realised that I needed to open my mind and ears further. Music now incorporated Jamaican off beats, Latin percussion, sparkling guitars, honkytonk piano, deep-south gospel calls, synth melody hooks and the kind of anthemic melodies Bruce Springsteen keeps in his back pocket.

I get amped by all kinds of music now. I have worked in projects accross an array of genre's from Pop, Roots, Folk, Soul, R'n'B, Indie, Rock, Electronic and back to Punk. I love it all.

I've taught myself how to play, and deliver. I've learned how to write through hundreds of songs. I've learned how to listen and find balance in arrangements from constantly creating music. I've locked myself in rooms for months, securing and executing visions. I've been signed, dropped, encouraged, discouraged, paid and ripped off. I've sweat, bled, laughed and cried; on stage, in the studio, in the rehearsal room, in the van and over a piece of paper. Whatever it is you are doing as an artist, I have probably experienced it and learned something from it.

Music is magical. It starts as nothing and results in a feeling. The beauty is in the details, the imperfections, the melody and the beat.

    Gun Barrel Straights

    8PM

    GUN BARREL

The Gun Barrel Straights are a Melbourne song-and-dance band based in the inner-North. The band consists of Brian (drums), Chris (vocals), Jim (bass), Matt (banjolin), Nic (Guitar, vocals) and Spencer (guitar). The band's influence list is long and varied but their sound is a bit of a mix between The Pogues and The Rolling Stones via Paul Kelly. The Gun Barrel Straights love the footy, a pint and talking all kinds of absolute shite. The band are set to release their debut single 'She's Moving Home' (recorded by Marcus Hobbs - East Brunswick All Girls Choir) in early-2015. You can usually find them propping up the bar of one of two hotels.

    Barebones Single Launch

    7pm

    barebones2

Melbourne alt/ rockers The Barebones launch their first single I Feel Fine. With the swagger of the Stones and a twin guitar onslaught reminiscent of the Young brothers, I Feel Fine is a triumphant rock n roll anthem about casting off depressive self-criticism and rumination, a subject singer-songwriter Matt Simmons is not unfamiliar with. Chosen as the perfect introduction to their debut album ‘Where Have All The Good Folk Gone’ (set for release in Sept 2016) the first 100 punters will also receive a free download of the single. The album ‘Where Have All The Good Folk Gone’ was recorded at Hamer Hall by local luminary D. Rogers (Ben Lee, ex-Klinger) and showcases the band’s song craft and versatility, careering effortlessly between pared back Wilco-esque alt-country to bar room rock n roll. The Barebones will perform in stripped back acoustic and full band mode over two sets at the kind of early time of 7 – 9pm. Free entry.

‘The Barebones mix elements of Wilco’s alt-country and the UK’s pub-rock of Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello, while also recalling Aussie-indie forebears Bluebottle Kiss and The Panics.’ – BEAT Magazine.

    CARGO CULTS, EARLY NIGHTS, DOGGEREL

    7pm

    CARGO CULTS

In Early Nights, Melbourne singer/songwriters Alice Williams and Shanna Watson take turns playing each other's songs, backed by the exceedingly impressive Sam Peterson on drums, breaking for axe swaps and witty banter and busting out harmonies that'll stop you on your way to the beer garden.’

A Hard working and proudly independent band, Cargo Cults delivers psychedelic alt country vibes drawing from a wide range of influences. Dark and intriguing song writing matched with layered and carefully constructed compositions. Warm melodic bass, duelling guitars and harmonicas and not a drum beat to be found!

It’s hard to say if Doggerel is a blues act or not but, in a bastardising and non-bowdlerising kind of way, it sort of is. There’s drums, there’s slide guitar, there’s vocals, there’s talk of drink and death and girls and there you have it – all the classic ingredients for a crude mix of 12-bar mutual commiseration.

    Jess Parker

Jess Parker writes the sort of song you wish you, yourself had written. With a soulfull, mournful sound ripped straight from the pages of the book on Mississippi blues, you would be hard pressed to believe this Melbourne local was anything but that. Be careful to listen closely, or you may miss the subtle yet sureal lyrics that makes Jess's stripped back and personal performance a must see.

Exemplifying the spirit of Texas from a time long ago, when men were men, women were women, whisky was currency, and heartbreak wasn't a dirty word. Cash bonanza plays American influenced country balladry, with a unique Australian rock sensibility. Musical stories from the south through the blurry eyes of the old West. The kind of music you can bond with your grandfather over, and you're both still cooler than your dad.

Bits of Shit, Amyl & the Sniffers

    8PM

    bos

Melbourne punk rock quartet BITS OF SHIT have been wowing the absolute shit out of audiences both here and abroad for nearly a decade. They've got 7"s on iconic overseas labels such as 12XU and Total Punk, a best-selling LP on hot-to-trot local imprint, Homeless Records, and a tour of the USA under their belt (where they played the garage-punk institution in Memphis, Gonerfest). Middle age will not slow them down. They're off to Japan in June and July, but before they delight our northerly neighbours with their balls-to-the-wall rock & roll, they'll be playing one last local show (for a loooong time) at the Labour In Vain in Fitzroy. Equal parts Rose Tattoo and Black Flag, they really do go to the show that with maturity comes a certain sense of savage grace.

However, saying “Good-bye” should never be as much fun as saying “Hello” and with this in mind, we welcome everyone’s favourite vasiodilator’s… ‘Amyl and the Sniffers’: a heady chemical wash of music, manufactured to melt all molecular bonds. Dyno-might! NO BURN / NO TURN. Come see and set yourself free.

The Cramps were like no other band. Singer Lux Interior's death put an end to them until Melbourne’s Hypno Sex Ray started covering their songs... Credited with coining the term "psychobilly", The Cramps blended a 50’s RnR sensibility with a love of kitsch horror and lewd lyrics. The coupling of Lux & Poision Ivy - a psycho-sexual Elvis and his vixen soul-mate - produced legendary, raw and riotous performances. As Lux says, 'You gotta live until you're dead, you gotta rock 'til you see red, now do you understand?' If you’ve ever wondered 'What’s Inside a Girl' or fancied a 'Two Headed Sex Change’ join us in a celebration of stripped-down inspired rock and roll.

    Bailey

Andrew Bailey (Blown Cones) was recently challenged by Kate Alexander (Junk Horses) to a song writing challenge. For ten weeks we each had to email each other a finished song every Thursday afternoon at 5pm precisely. This task (just ask anyone who writes music) was not an easy one, but we both managed to get a song on the deadline each week. It caused both parties considerable stress and preternatural pain. Along with a few other choice selections, we are going to play some of the results of this competition so that you may share that pain and stress. Bailey might even throw a couple Cones numbers stripped to the core with fellow Cone, Jeff Samin on the bass. A must see and hear event. Many drinks will be cried in.

James Thomson & the Strange Pilgrams

    8PM

    James Thomson

James Thomson is a critically acclaimed musician and songwriter from Newcastle, NSW. He has released two highly regarded albums and toured nationally multiple times, both as a solo artist and with his band The Strange Pilgrims. Thomson’s latest album Cold Moon is a soulful trip through blues, rock and roll, country, folk and beyond.

James’ grandfather was a multi-instrumentalist musician and from a young age James heard a steady stream of country, blues and jazz music. After being given a guitar by a relative, James started learning simple chords and songs. Fascinated by the versatility of artists like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, James set about discovering their respective influences and was soon hearing artists like Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, Hank Williams, The Everley Brothers, as well as traditional folk and blues music, which all had a lasting musical impression.

Inspired by these new musical discoveries James started regularly playing and singing in bands during his late teens. Often these bands played anything from garage rock to soul, blues, folk and country - but soon enough James started seeking a different kind of creative outlet and a way to blend his musical influences in a more seamless way. He started writing his own songs to help realise this vision and in late 2012 James recorded a debut album of his own songs at Grant Shanahan’s (Eva Trout, The Honeys, Catherine Wheel) studio in Peat’s Ridge, NSW.

This self titled album was released in 2013 and won Thomson and his song writing high praise, with The Sydney Morning Herald calling the album ‘something special’.  Following the success of his debut album and the subsequent tour that accompanied its release, James took three months off to write and travel in the US in late 2013. The majority of James’ second album Cold Moon was written on this trip and once back in Australia he set to recording the new songs, once again with Grant Shanahan.  Cold Moon was released in mid 2015 and immediately caught the attention of radio, publications, blogs and more, becoming something of an underground sensation both in Australia and abroad. Cold Moon rounded out the year by appearing on numerous ‘Best of 2015’ lists and specials such as Double J’s Tower of Song program, The Music’s Chris Familton favourite albums of 2015 list and coming in at #2 on influential Australian Blog Post To Wire’s favourite albums of the year. James Thomson and The Strange Pilgrims are currently performing, writing and demoing songs for a widely anticipated new album.

    Warped

    8PM

    Warped china

For 21 years Warped has been an evolving rock and roll animal. For Benny and Cris, Warped has been a life long commitment. Having started the band as 13 year olds in Geelong and being considered veterans at the age of 18, Benny and Cris have seen many come and many go and are part of rock and roll history in Geelong, Melbourne and Australia.

Several incarnations have seen Darren, Nathan, Matt, Justin, Brett, Toddy and Sammy all play their part in the incredible beast that has been Warped over the years. For regular Melbourne live music punters between 1991 and 2004 seeing Warped play was as essential as having vegemite in the house and as normal being able to buy a beer at the pub.

Over the years, Warped have shared the stage with many international acts. Amongst others, they include Dinosaur Jnr, Fugazi, Henry Rollins, Audioslave, The Melvins, Dick Dale, Nebula, The Backyard Babies, The Hellacopters, The Distillers, Andrew WK, Fu Manchu, The Dwarves, The Donnas, but by far the most important and cherished memories are the times they shared the stage with bands and friends like Bored!, the Cosmic Psychos, the Dirty Lovers, the Onyas, Powder Monkeys, The Hard-Ons, The Meanies, Magic Dirt, Spiderbait, Legends of Motorsport, Dern Rutledge, Further, The Nation Blue, Tumbleweed and The Mark of Cain to name but a few.

Warped have also been a active part of the Melbourne music community, regularly appearing at Radio benefits for PBS, RRR, 3CR, as well as countless other worthwhile community causes over the years.

Among an estimated 600+ shows so far, one series that will be immortalised among friends and fans will be the Seven Nights of Sins show at the North Melbourne Town Hall. It came in September 2002, when Warped bought North Melbourne to a stand still with an experience that, according to publican John Collins, truly shook the foundations and cemented the legend that is Warped live, with over 150+ people packed in the tiny 70 capacity room of Town Hall, spilling out onto the laneway to witness the event through the windows, every night, seven of them in a row.

Warped have produced a large catalog of music in 21 years. Starting out on the infamous Au Go Go label, Warped put out mini-albums and albums as well as a series of fanzines. A new home at Festival Mushroom Records produced the groundbreaking and long celebrated ‘On the Make’ album along with a handful of singles and videos. Several independent 7” releases, a picture disc, split 7”s and even limited press cassettes, saw the light of day. Countless bootleg and radio sessions live recordings exist, as do hundreds of hours of live video footage. Releases in Europe and Japan during the years came in many forms from many labels. A final album, “Quicker Ways to Blacker Eyes’ was released on Casadeldisco – and a new home was found at Shock. Often noted as their best album, it has received wide spread airplay and praise as an Australian Rock and Roll album to be put on the shelf with the greats.

The chance to record with Rose Tattoo’s Angry and Pete Wells as well as the very final recording sessions in legendary Festival Studios in Sydney were brushes with history for Warped, as was a set at the legendary Broadford Festival.

Warped have always been known as a band who always did what they wanted. If they felt like they wanted to play for seven nights in a row, they did. If they felt like they wanted to make an album, they did. If they wanted to play free shows, they did. Warped were true cavaliers in the Australian music scene. They always fought the good fight for better or for worse. They had their run-ins at different times with various members of the media, record labels, promoters and bookers, but at the same time they also found some incredible people in those very same industries that will remain life long friends.

His distinctive, enigmatic vocal style and unique take on finger picking with both Guitar and Mandolin should see this burgeoning talent considered one of Australia’s most exciting songwriters.

this friday at the The Labour In Vain, Joshua Seymour and his band of "gentlemen" (Andrew Watson / The Man Who Wasn't There and Timothy O'Shannassy) will play two enticing sets for the ears of all those present.

2 sets will be played and many bad jokes mumbled.
Please come along if you happen to be in the area.
If you aren't, simply say that you are on the event page in order to make the event look popular within the realm of this here comprehensive book of faces.

Rich Davies & the Low Road, Rattlin' Bones Blackwood

    5pm

    Rich Davies

Renowned for his captivating live shows and ‘superbly crafted songs dragged up from the depths of the soul‘ (Desert Highways), award-winning singer-songwriter Rich Davies is gaining a reputation as one of Melbourne’s most authentic and engaging artists. With a poet’s heart and a rocker’s soul, Davies spent his formative years in the folk clubs of Scotland, steeped in the ethos and traditions of the genre. The evolution of his upcoming second album, Ghosts, has seen Davies reconnect with that world, as he peels back the skin of rock’n’roll to expose Old-Time Folk, Americana and Celtic bones.

Rich Davies & The Low Road; fellow singer-songwriter Ayleen O’Hanlon on backing vocals & banjo, Stirling Gill-Chambers (The Bon Scotts) on violin & vocals, and Kat Ogilvie on accordion, lagerphone & vocals ; deliver a unique fusion of Folk and Americana, with a nuanced, heart-on-sleeve sound that brings Davies’ song-writing and voice to the fore. Equal parts fragile and fierce, spanning a sonic spectrum from tender ballads to upbeat foot stompers.

Described as ‘hauntingly beautiful’ by Patrick Emery (Beat Magazine), Davies has performed alongside Australian artists Jeff Lang, Mick Thomas, Dobe Newton (Bushwackers), The Drones, Paul Dempsey and Marlon Williams; international acts Snow Patrol, KT Tunstall, The Dandy Warhols and Beck; and has played a number of European festivals including Big Tent Festival and T In The Park.

    Sam Reiher Solo

    8PM

    Sam Reiner

Making no name in the not so successful hit band The Scouts, Sam Reiher has taken his musical career in a solo direction which will become official with the forthcoming EP, recorded and produced by Bill Chambers, set to be released in September. His style of folky ballads and up beat honky tonk tunes is hardly ground breaking but a crowd pleasing blend, nonetheless.

    Essential listening.

    The Vignettes, Maps of Tasmania

    8PM

    MAPSbw vig

    Maps of Tasmania
Soft Rock gets a bad rap. Usually attributed to acts like Air Supply, Toto and Bread, one can see where the seeds of such a reputation were sown, but this is mid 2016, and Maps of Tasmania are here to set the record straight. Gone are the mounds of cocaine, the hairspray, the yacht envy –everything is stripped to the bone, like punk rock…just played softly. Featuring members of not-so soft rock bands (Legends of Motorsport and Warpigs) Maps of Tasmania bring some long overdue respectability to a much maligned genre. Saviours of Soft Rock? You decide.

    The Vignettes
The Vignettes are a four-piece band based in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Bound with a passion for both classic rock and traditional folk music, the Vignettes have set their task to amalgamate the two genres together to create an interesting blend of storytelling and rock and roll.

    JOHN DOWLER VANITY PROJECT

    5pm

    Jon Dowler 2

    John Dowler with
    Mark McCartney - guitar
Julien Chick - bass, backing vocals
    Michael Stranges - drums
    Justin Bowd - guitar

While I don’t normally spend much time dwelling on my musical past, two projects, involving the release of songs and performances of mine from the late seventies and early eighties, have served to focus my mind on events and endeavors from thirty years ago and more. The first is the imminent release (October 24) of a CD compilation, “(When The Sun Sets Over) Carlton”, a snapshot of Melbourne’s inner city music scene in the seventies, a scene in which two of my old groups had a peripheral involvement. There is more information concerning this release elsewhere on this site. The second is the proposed release of a live album by the Zimmermen. Recorded at a couple of suburban beer barns in 1984, this should see the light of day sometime in 2015.
Also, August 2014 was the 40th anniversary of my first band’s inaugural public performance, a commemoration that was seemingly forgotten by everyone, including myself. So, while I’m in a nostalgic, though unsentimental, state of mind, I thought I’d jot down a brief outline of my output thus far.

    Lazy Colts Album Launch

    5pm

    lazy colts

Cinematic alt-folk group, Lazy Colts have today announced the release of their brooding new single, Twenty Two, the second taste of their debut LP, Trojan, set for release on August 5. They’ll be hitting the road in August to celebrate the new LP, kicking off in Melbourne on August 6 and moving on to Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney then wrapping up in Katoomba on September 4.

Twenty Two is a reverent and reflective ode to youth and the naivety that dictates the relationships formed during that time. Emphasised by the pulse of young blood that dictates the arc of the song, the organic nature of the drums, piano and violin resonate under lead singer Lacey Cole’s effortless vocals. Acoustic and raw, Twenty Two encompasses country and folk influences to illicit a rich blend of sound that is lush and satisfying. Of the single, Cole remarks, “Essentially, Twenty Two is about the grand ‘undying’ sentiments that hallmark your first cracks at a serious relationship. It’s about perspective, initially, the lack of it, and then the revelation that the reason you’re in your situation – however great or bad it is – is also the reason you will get through it: you’re only 22 years old.”

Directed by Sarah Adamson (The Preatures, Gideon Benson, Matt Corby), the video clip for Twenty Two is a filmic representation of both the vulnerablilty and the joy of being young. Starring Sydney-based model Evelina Milward, the film seeks to balance the song's morose male dialogue with a feminine depiction of happiness and beauty. The tone is both nostalgic and immediate; an authentic depiction of youth's resilience and wonder. Speaking about the clip, director Sarah Adamson says, “I saw this great opportunity to lovingly poke fun at the sincerity of the song. I had this picture in my head of a girl listening to this love song some boy had written her but not really caring as much as he thought she would. She's doing all these other funny and weird things a 22 year old girl might do when bored at home by herself. She is only 22. She knows there's nothing to really worry about.”

Lazy Colts’ debut album, Trojan is a fine example of the state of Australian songwriting. Broad, triumphant, and satisfying, yet devastating, emotive and raw, the group have put a mirror to the human experience and Trojan is the result. Mixed by renowned engineer, Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Timber Timbre), the release has been two years in the making and calls upon a variety of influences including The National, Nick Cave and Bruce Springsteen. Recorded in part inside a local church, Cole reflects on the process, “I’m not sure the songs would sound the same if they were written and performed in a living room or garage. There is definitely a reverence or awareness of the space and the mood the empty church sets which lives on in the album...Trojan is set against grand backdrops of religion, myth, violence and politics, but the songs themselves are more personal, focusing on relationships and the fleeting moments between people.”

Lazy Colts will be hitting the road on a national tour in August to celebrate the release of Trojan. Giving fans a taste of what to expect from the shows, Cole enthuses, “Audiences can expect energy, passion, dynamic arrangements and musicianship. The rest of the band bring an element of sophistication and skill which strikes a nice balance with my more unhinged vibe. All in all, it’s a good time, it’s like rays of light through storm clouds.”

    Luke Daniel Peacock Album Launch

    8PM

    Luke Peacock

Their latest album ‘Any Old Love’ has received huge praise and the opening track ‘Dropout’ – penned by Peacock and produced by Robert Forster (The Go-Betweens) and Peter Jesperson (The Replacements) – has quickly become a fan favourite.

‘Dropout’ was nominated for Best Rock Song in the 2015 Queensland Music Awards, with The Australian calling the song a “ludicrously catchy instant-classic that is at once familiar and unique”.

Luke is also the front man and creator of the much talked about music project The Painted Ladies. Luke revived the lost songs of Vic Simms, releasing the groundbreaking and AIR award nominated ‘The Painted Ladies Play Selections From The Loner’ in 2014.

The album was produced by Rusty Hopkinson (You Am I) and features such Australian indie rock artists as The Medics, Paul Kelly, Ed Kuepper (The Saints/The Laughing Clowns), Ian Haug (Powderfinger/The Church), John Willsteed (The Go-Betweens), Phil Noy & Eugene Ball (The Bamboos), Bunna Lawrie (Coloured Stone) and many more.

The story of this project was featured on ABC’s 7:30 Report and was the subject of a free-to-air documentary titled ‘The Loner’.

Peacock has since produced an acclaimed live show, playing the songs to audiences across Australia, with shows at the Brisbane Festival, Womadelaide and the NIMA’s in Darwin. The Music declared the show “a remarkable achievement.. with such a reconciliatory and celebratory grandeur”.

Between these two bands, Luke has been putting together his first album of solo works. Titled ‘We’ve Come a Long Way, Darling‘, the album is a culmination of twelve years playing and writing, ten tracks stretching wide across the spectrum of rock’n’roll.

The album displays Peacock’s knack for exploring serious topics, whilst not taking things too seriously, at once conveying hopelessness and providing hope. ‘We’ve Come a Long Way, Darling’ is due for release soon, accompanied by its first single ‘Dreambox’. Peacock will be touring the release in 2016 and beyond.

    Harry Jakamarra

    5pm

    harry Jak

Take West African desert blues, old Appalachian stomp, grungy folk rock and a few wild stories. Throw in rusty campfire pot and stir with banjo.

Harry Jakamarra grew up in Broome, WA where he started playing the guitar at age 12 (after seeing the Warumpi Band perform) was gigging at 13 and by 18 was studying the music of India and North Africa right at the source. Including a narrow escape from a music festival in Mali that rapidly descended into a civil war.

Harry released his impressive debut album in 2010. Now 23 Harry is soon to release a second album, produced by legendary Australian musician Jeff Lang.

Harry lives and tours in his home made house truck, once a fire engine now a quirky, gypsy home that runs on waste cooking oil.

Throughout his relatively young musical career Harry has played with and supported acts such as John Butler, Missy Higgins and Paul Kelly, to name a few.

Harry’s songs are a mix of poetic mastery combined with raw and rhythmic playing. Drawing on a wealth of life experience uncharacteristic of his age (including time spent as a crocodile skinner) he creates a dark and complex lyrical world.

He is an accomplished ‘claw hammer’ banjoist and his guitar playing is uniquely intricate.

"Harry plays that banjo with all the revered spirit of the 'ole timey' while lighting a new exciting virtuosic flame underneath it" - John Butler

He has recently been nominated for a WAM song of the year award.

Keep an ear out for Harry’s soon to be released second album.

    GLORIOUS NORTH 1

The Glorious North is a country rock band from Melbourne Australia. Their debut album, 'Welcome to the Glorious North' invites you into a whiskey-stained world of lost loves, loaded Lugers and booze-addled broken hearts.

Early Paul Kelly, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Wilco are some of the influences you will hear echoing through 'Welcome to The Glorious North', creating a sound that is supercharged country pop. Lyrics to lead you into the beautiful darkness tell tales of small bars in the small hours and the sordid sins of lost and lonesome souls.

'Welcome to The Glorious North' adds to a lineage that runs from Hank Williams to Nick Cave and it's sure to make you want to cry, cheer and puke into your Stetson ... possibly all at the same time.

    QUEENSLAND
Melodic soulful guitar pop jams from Central Victoria
Queensland is the brand new band from Mikey Madden (The Vandas, Gruntbucket) and features Ryan Mccarthy (St Jude, Dynamo), Chris Roberts (The Wardens, The Legs) and Sam Fiddian (Cold Irons Bound, Downhills Home).
Taking cues from the sounds of Tom Petty, Crazy Horse and Big Star, Queensland forge their own sound through infectious pop hooks and killer guitar workouts.
This will be Queensland's FIRST EVER show, with support from the fabulous Mark Campbell & The Ravens.

Mark Campbell crafts songs of heart-rending truth and beauty, with lyrics that had Oscar-winner Glen Hansard reaching for a pen to write them on his arm. Previously a key member of JJJ-darlings 'Folding For Air', and 'Souls on Board,' he has built a live "wall of sound" behind songs that "ooze honesty." (Beat Mag) Accompanied by a horn and string section, the live band weave a rootsy blend of alt. country, rock, and folk that has seen them already support many great icons of indie music in Australia, including Ross McLennan (Snout), The Gin Club and Sarah McLeod.

    MIGHTEST OF GUNS

On Friday September 16th Mightiest of Guns are going to be making a mess at The Labour In Vain playing two sets of the darkest sludgiest country noise you are likely to hear.
Our courageous drummer, Dale has a new super kidney and will be using his new powers to punish your heads.
This is a Free show. Bring ya gumboots and best heckles
    Poster by God-Awful
MIGHTIEST OF GUNS are a dark country quartet from Melbourne. Featuring members of Cash Savage And The Last Drinks, and The Baudelaires; their gritty, raucous songs are inspired by desperation, drunkenness and cruelty.

Their debut EP, Strange Birds was released in September 2013 to a sold out crowd at Fitzroy's The Old Bar. It received glowing reviews and airplay around the country and has seen the band cross state borders, tour regional Victoria and join various festivals.

Their debut album Drink Over Your Grave (2015) was produced by Brooke Penrose from Alt Country darlings Saint Jude. The album was released September 2015 and is full of fire, brimstone and everything they could muster. Taking a noisy, more vicious approach to the brutality found in the myths of Bushrangers, the Wild West and contemporary booze-houndary.

The first single off the album The Regrets Of Darkie Gardiner was released to more sold out crowds and rave reviews. The band released second single Hot North Wind in June, followed shortly afterwards by single and film clip for Sawtooth Knife allowing them to tour nationally.

"[Mightiest of Guns]'s latest single brings a morbid, murder-ballad-style strain of storytelling to the life of bushranger Frank Gardiner"
    - Mess+Noise 2014

"Melbourne returns to its outlaw country roots, when Graveyard Train, Cash Savage and The Toots reigned supreme. Mightiest of Guns may be heralding in the next wave of dusty New Balance, bearded urban cowboys".

He walks in nobody's shadow. Waz brings something new to the table, snapshots of real life, love and lost love, the long road, mates, lovers and family... from his pen to us. I believe in his music and feel that we could use a little more uniqueness in today's music." John Beland

    BACKWOOD CREATURES W/ IVY

    7pm

    Backwood Creatures IVY

IVY SPRING TOUR 2016 Fuzzed out tones, soul drenched swagger, unrelenting howls, IVY hit you right in the goddamn feels. A modest 2015 saw IVY sweat the stage with You Am I, British India, tour the East Coast with blues legends The Fumes, refine their ridiculously danceable rock’n’roll show, release a couple of jams, score some Triple J airplay and continue writing for their new EP. - with producer Ryan Hazell (Green Buzzard, The Drones, The Snowdroppers) 2016 kicked off to an absolute flyer - Mountain Sounds Festival (Violent Soho, The Delta Riggs), Sweaty Palms Festival (Kingswood, Bootleg Rascal) an East Coast run with blue legends The Fumes, and of course, opening the mainstage of Byron Bay Bluesfest (Tom Jones, Joe Bonamassa, Modest Mouse) as winner of their busking competition.

GHOST TOWNS OF THE MID WEST

    5pm

    Ghost Towns of the Midwest.

“Ghost Towns of the Midwest. A great band with a pretty good taste in wine.” Stephen Walker, (The Ghost) - 102.7RRRFM

Ghost Towns of the Midwest launched their debut EP "Field Recordings" in 2014, to a humbling response from both RRRFM & PBSFM, in particular receiving weekly spins from ex station manager "The Ghost" himself, Stephen Walker, aswell as enjoying glowing reviews & national plays on Triple J’s "Roots n All" program.

    GHOST TOWNS

The 5-piece band melds both beautiful & barroom vocal harmonies over acoustic guitars, bass, piano, violin, harmonica & mandolin to create a sound that goes from upbeat boot stompers to bar room ballads. The group includes friends Cam has performed with for over 15 years.

“You stole the show man!” Dave Larkin (Dallas Crane)

    Isaiah B Brunt

    8PM

    isaiah

Isaiah has been a top Aussie production guy and former studio owner of Darling Harbor studios who's worked along side some of Australia's top groups including solo projects by Rob Hirst, Midnight Oil, Steve Prestwich, Cold Chisel, Julio Iglesias and his Orchestra, American Idols Randy Jackson and Goo Goo Dolls have rehearsed there during Australian tours. Not only has Isaiah been behind the board for globally upper echelon bands he's been a go-to side man for bands touring down under like the time Keanu Reeves band Dog Star hit Sydney and Isaiah recorded them aiding them on their shows around Sydney.

All the while he was working with other peoples music, Isaiah always knew where his heart lay. The same place it first was when he heard his father strum the ukulele, blow harmonica and unleash the lap steel.

Isaiah was the 2010 Sydney Blues Society's Performer of the Year and some of you may have caught him at the 2011 IBC, probably the best dressed cat in Memphis and good enough musically to be one of the very few to be reviewed in The Memphis Daily.

    Sugar Bowl Hokem

    sugar

Driven by their love of obscure songs from the 1920’s and 30’s, Sugar Bowl
Hokum scour the crackly grooves of old 78’s to find the best forgotten
    blues gems of the era.
The music of some very feisty almost forgotten trail blazers makes up a
    large part of their repertoire.
Merline Johnson, Barrel House Annie, Rosetta Howard and Ma Rainey songs
are performed in different arrangements than the listener may be used to
but always capturing the essence of the song and the times.
As a result they do not slavishly stick to one style, incorporating the
many sounds of blues into their repertoire from the classic blues of Bessie
    Smith to the R&B of
Ruth Brown the Ragtime of Blind Blake and Blind Boy Fuller, the Hokum of
Bo Carter, the gritty songwriting of Memphis Minnie with Swing, Country
Blues and Early Jazz all included in the mix.

The resulting sound is a fun, entertaining upbeat take on the blues.Featuring singer Big Mama whose powerhouse vocals are  ably complemented by Tanya Maree' virtuosic trumpet weaving a call and response tapestry with the vocal lines and the finger-licking picking of Michael Meissner’s guitar  supported by PK on double bass and Tim O’Driscoll on drums who form a rhythm section that swings like a monkey in the jungle.

Colin Jones & the Delta Revue

    8PM

    colin-jones

If it's a ‘baby done me wrong’ troubadour you’re after, this ain't your man. Colin Jones’ voice ranges from a raspy whisper to full throttle growl in true Delta
    Bluesmen tradition.
Having built a reputation as one of Sydney’s best up and coming acts, Colin Jones and The Delta Revue have played their dirty blues with acts like, Gordi, Melody Pool, Leroy Lee and Joel Havea (Berlin)

The band has seen the stage of venues such as, The Basement, Venue 505 and Hermann’s Bar for the charity concert, The Home Stretch. As well as appearing at well known events such as Little Features, Porch Light Sessions, The Batch Sessions and the Sydney chapter of the global pop-up gig Sofar Sounds.

2015 was a big year for Colin Jones & The Delta Revue as it saw the release of their first set of recordings – Toledo, OH. This record was arranged and recorded live over one week in the winter of 2012 in Toledo, Ohio, USA.

With a desire to fully realize the vision of his sound, this year Colin is planning to add to the live collaboration that is The Delta Revue. They will also be taking the show to the road to play to their ever-increasing fanbase.
So whether it's Colin Jones solo or backed by The Delta Revue, this is the sort of music that drives you to the dark night of the soul.

    Backwood Creatures

    5pm

    backwood-oct16

CUP DAY CHERRYWOOD & DRUNKEN POACHERS

    5pm

    cherrywood drunken-poachers

CUP DAY AT THE LABOUR IN VAIN

    Races on the big screen.

    Cherrywood 6pm

    Drunken Poachers 5pm

Cherrywood’s music features tales of lightning strikes, broken hearts, bar stools and prisons; all brought to life through an array of battered acoustic instruments and a bunch of bar-room vocals. The quartet’s love of Trad. Country and Folk music sits harmoniously with their Punk and Rock n’ Roll lineage to give Cherrywood a sound of their own.
After honing their craft touring around the country solidly for the last two years on the back of two singles, ‘No More’ and ‘Broken Heart for Christmas’, they’re finally releasing their debut album – Book of Matches.
Recorded by Matt Duffy (Graveyard Train, The Peep Tempel) during a bitter winter in an old country guesthouse, Book of Matches was laid down in two days, straight to tape with minimal overdubs and a swaggering live feel.
Book of Matches proves an earnest portrayal of the band’s live show – full of raw energy, fast paced and explosive sing-alongs, including those of guests’ Graveyard Train’s Josh Crawley and Harmony’s Erica Dunn, who add further texture to several songs with slide guitar and backing vocals. Catchy and immediate,Book of Matches shouts the listener a drink and dances them around the room.
New single ‘Could Wash No Devil from my Bones’ and its accompanying video captures Cherrywood’s character; a rambling late night tale of a child possessed, flowing booze and other late-night bluster and vices. Directed by Chris Matthews (Batpiss) and shot candidly on location between a fifty year old boxing ring and the band’s usual drinking holes, this video aims to celebrate the countercultures which have existed for decades in the back- streets of inner Melbourne.
The Drunken Poachers, with their wily ways and wooden instruments, have snuck boot-clad and boozed onto Melbourne’s live music stages. A dubious sextet not to be trusted, they poach the tunes of others and after a white-wash of their brand of Irish-blue-grass-country, they declare what never belonged to them, their own.

Dishonest and dirty and wearing flannelette better than you do, they’re leaving heavy heads and dented floors in their very catchy wake. With the aid of banjo, gee-tah, ukulele and mandolin, backed by Irish fiddle, uke bass and propped up with lager phone and a trifle of trumpet, their hearty harmonic throat is unlike any other.

The Drunken Poachers have a bashful approach to making feet tap and will be your best laid plan when you are out and on the hunt. Don’t go past The Drunken Poachers if you’re in to a band who will have your feet tapping to the bar and back. And back again.

    Redspencer w/ Bobby Brave

    8PM

    redspencer

    Redspencer

In 2013, rural-born brothers Dave and Aiden McMillian traded the sun-drenched plains of northern New South Wales for the rich, cultural tapestry — and comparatively dreary weather — of Melbourne. 2015 sees the two siblings (alongside Andre Franco on bass) continue to draw influence from their provenance in Redspencer.

Latest single ‘Happy Slow Riverbends’ is a hark back to the band’s humble beginnings, evoking images of balmy, mid-summer drives along the coast with the windows down. Channeling the trademark nonchalance of ‘90s cult-classics Yo La Tengo, the three-piece go about their music armed with jangly guitars and vocals packed with warmth and charm, rousing comparisons to the likes of Deerhunter and Spoon.

Jo Meares Band

    5pm

    jo-mears

Jo's first solo album 'A Handful of Smoke' was awarded Australian Album of the year on the highly respected radio show Outpost on 2SER.
It was recorded over 2 years in France, Sydney and Melbourne involving members of Charles Jenkins and the Zhivagos, French pianist Lisa Barel and what were to become his band the Honeyriders...

Jo Meares’ music is unique with a truly original sound. He is a wonderful singer-songwriter and incredible live performer.
His 3 albums released to date (‘A Handful Of Smoke’, ‘One More Time’ and ‘King Of The Crystal Mountain’) are all classic Australian recordings.
Part Neil Young, part Lou Reed, part Nick Cave – but with a uniquely Australian twang
    !”
    - Vinny Ramone, Outpost show 2SER

In over 35 years in the music industry, 15 of them running the independent record label Laughing Outlaw, I’ve been lucky enough to have heard more music than most people.
The only downside to that is that it takes a real lot to impress me.
I’d been aware of Jo Meares but not listened to him until his ‘King Of The Crystal Mountain’ album was released.
It’s an album I now consider one of the finest Australian singer songwriter albums of the past decade and in fact it would be better to say that it’s a world class album created by an Australian.
I’ve subsequently heard all Jo’s previous albums and admire them too.
Not only are the albums magnificent, he is a truly exceptional live performer who deserves to be much better known than he currently is. That will happen.
I’m part of the Jo Meares fan club!

    - Stuart Coupe, writer, manager Laughing Outlaw records, DJ 2FBI and 2SER

Jo's second solo album 'One More Time' was made with the Honeyriders and involves a sixteen piece string section, beautiful backing vocals and lush guitar sounds.

All Jo's albums are available for digital download or a hard copy can be ordered through this website. Also limited vinyl pressings.

Jo plays most years in France, Spain, Finland and Germany and is gradually building his following there.

His June 2014 release of the album 'King of the Crystal Mountain' in Australia was followed by an extensive tour of Europe in 2015 involving France, Spain, Finland, and Germany.

Mick Daley & the Corporate Raiders

    5pm

    mick-daley

Best known as frontman and songwriter for hard-travelling band The Re-mains, and after twenty years on the road through Australia, Canada and Europe, Mick Daley has taken a turn for the verse with a swag of new solo picking songs. Reared on Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Townes Van Zandt and Nick Cave, these songs bear their lyrical and musical hallmarks, by turns tender and savage.

In 2014 he recorded an album, ‘Courage and Shuffle the Cards’ with The Corporate Raiders at Sydney’s Megaphon studios. In April 2015 he worked with Melbourne’s singer songwriting multi-instrumentalist legend Matt Walker on a proper acoustic solo album, Tiny Violins.

With these ballads and dirges he delivers a rich history as a genuine Australian folksinger.

Coming on top of the eight albums of original material released with The Re-Mains and played on national radio and television and in Europe and Canada, this represents a significant body of work –enough for Jeff Glorfeld of The Melbourne Age to call The Re-mains “arguably Australia’s best country rock band”.

Mick’s new solo work, which returns to his folksy, hitching-around-Australia-thinking-he-was-Bob-Dylan roots, kickstarted at the 2014 Majors Creek festival and in pubs and clubs around NSW and Victoria. Hauling the personal kicking and screaming into the political arenas, he’s fond of stark tales from the interesting times we live in. As well as rock and roll. There’ll be rock, there’ll be folky rock, there’ll be country rock n roll, if Jones is squiffy, there’ll be bossanova.

There are two chapters of The Corporate Raiders, one residing in Sydney, one in Melbourne. Melbourne boasts the inimitable Scotty Dog Bennett, a long-time Re-main and founding Raider. A king-hit drummer, much demand in his beloved and chilly city. Tarmes.

    NINETYNINE W/ CAROLINE NO.

    8PM

    ninety caroline

Ninetynine will be launching the video for their new single 'Further' on December 10 at the Labour in Vain. Joining them will be Caroline No. Free entry 8-10pm.
Hailing from Melbourne, Ninetynine combine indie guitar rock stylings with tuned percussion and layerings of casio keyboard to create a unique kind of pop music.
    BANDE MAGNETIQUE
Bande Magnetique is the latest album from Melbourne's Ninetynine. Variously described as "versatile and talented" by Rolling Stone and "quite wonderful" by legendary UK DJ John Peel the band have toured Europe and North America a number of times and had albums and singles released in the U.S.,Canada, Germany, Finland and Spain. On this, their seventh album, they continue to break new ground combining gorgeous female fronted casio pop with jagged indie rock, lush string arrangements and quirky tuned percussion.
Caroline No is a song-based group formed around the musical work of Caroline Kennedy, Ian Wadley, Mladen Milinkovic and a shifting lineup that includes Helen Johnstone (Garbage and The Flowers), Esther Edquist (Superstar) and Mick Turner (Dirty Three). From set pieces to improvised song the group works within a field of shimmering psychedelic pop, underground rock and folk structures. These regularly collapse and reform through other conventional and experimental prisms; narrative-based field trips become spacious, dynamic arcs and lyricism morphs into tracts of almost-silence or tightens up into fifties-style pop.

The band recorded two albums last year, one across a few evenings at home with a handheld recorder – “No Language”,released Oct 2015 on cassette (World News Records) and “Swimmers”, produced by Mick Turner at Big Moth, to be released next year through Eastmint.

Caroline is a singer-songwriter and painter, and has been in a number of bands including seminal Australian indie-slackers The Plums. Mladen fronts Lalic, and also plays guitar in the Merlocs. Ian Wadley has played various instruments in bands such as Bird Blobs, Minimum Chips and Mad Nanna, and guested in various others (Jandek, Six Organs Of Admittance).
